Their challenge
The City of Dawson Creek has faced many flood events in the last few decades that have impacted and disrupted their community. As part of an ongoing effort to ultimately mitigate flood risks, they needed up-to-date information on flood and erosion hazards within the City.
Our solution
We created a team of specialists, including surveyors and geohazard subconsultants to develop scientifically robust mapping products for the community. Working with subconsultants, we obtained a high-resolution DEM of the project area including LiDAR and channel bathymetry. This was used, along with a regional hydrology analysis, as the basis of inputs for a coupled 1D-2D hydraulic model (HEC-RAS) to produce modern flood maps under various scenarios, including climate change. The project also considered fluvial geomorphology and a stormwater drainage assessment to provide a multi-hazard perspective on risk reduction. This project also included public facing materials to support City staff to communicate why maps were made, what they show and what it means to individual residents.
Flooding has many components to it, and this has been crazy interesting to me in terms of how good the work has been and the information has been…regarding connecting with different levels of government to support future grant programs. The work that Ebbwater and Dawson Creek have been doing now on this flood planning is used as a pilot and discussion for lots of work going on around the province and nationally.
